Ebony Williams on Rising within the Ballet World

Talent, drive and passion trump everything.  This is truly the case for Ebony Williams who is a ballerina with Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and danced in Beyoncé’s viral video sensation, “Single Ladies.”  Earlier this year, the Washington Post wrote an article entitled, “Where are the black ballerinas,” as Williams, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Ashley Murphy and American Ballet Theater’s Misty Copeland graced the cover of Pointe magazine’ June/July 2014 annual career issue to discuss the lack of diversity in ballet communities.

I had the opportunity to get Ebony’s thoughts on this matter in August when she was a panelist during DnA Art’s “Made to Move” 1-Day intensive in New York City.  Listen to what she shared below.

And, watch Ebony rehearse ‘a dance of elbows’ below, which was choreographed by Benoit Swan Pouffer–it’s hard to look away!

What are your thoughts on the state of diversity in the ballet world?
